Total CO2 emissions from ITC’s operations (manufacturing & freight) amounted to 2046 kilotonnes in 2010-11 (1,709 KT in 2009-2010). Higher CO2 emissions were on account of significant growth in most businesses, as well as the use of revised emission factors for the transportation sector, published by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), UK.
However, the impact of higher CO2 emissions was partially mitigated through improved utilisation of biomass in the biofuel fired boiler at Bhadrachalam and commissioning of new wind energy plants.
ITC’s social and farm forestry initiatives added 11,652 hectares of plantations during 2010-11. Total plantations, as on March 31, 2011, covered nearly 1,14,000 hectares. The social and farm forestry initiative has not only contributed to a sustainable source of raw material for the Paperboards Business, but has also helped sequester 4011 kilotonnes of CO2, thus consolidating ITC’s status as a ‘Carbon Positive Company’ for the sixth year in a row. The social and farm forestry programme has also provided over 51.24 million person days of employment for small and marginal farmers. |
