ITC's Biodiversity Conservation Programme Enabling Climate Smart Agriculture

Preserving and restoring biodiversity is key to the long-term sustainability of agriculture and building climate resilience.

ITC’s Biodiversity Conservation Programme focuses on reviving ecosystem diversity and the services it provides to agriculture-such as facilitating natural regulation of pests, pollination, nutrient cycling, soil health retention and genetic diversity.

The programme promotes sustainable agriculture in crops like chilli, cumin, turmeric, celery, among others while enhancing biodiversity potential of the planted areas through retention of old-growth/snag trees, large woody debris, creation of water bodies, and community-centric biodiversity initiatives focused on livelihood generation. This is also supported through collaborations with Forest Departments, Panchayat Raj institutions and other development departments to build capacities.
