World Music Day 2026 | Vidushi Girija Devi's rare 1978 recording from ITCSRA Archives

This World Music Day, we present a rare recording from the archives of the ITC Sangeet Research Academy — one of the earliest recordings of Vidushi Girija Devi. Recorded on 7 April 1978, during the Academy’s formative years, the evening marked a Holi celebration through music. The programme featured noted Hindustani classical musicians including Ustad Latafat Hussain Khan, Vidushi Hirabai Barodekar and Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan. Among the performances was Vidushi Girija Devi of the Benares Gharana, presenting a Hori Thumri in Raag Pilu. As we celebrate World Music Day, we are pleased to share this archival recording — offering a glimpse into the Academy’s early years and the contributions of artists whose music continues to be appreciated across generations.
