How ITC is building a water-secure future through public-private partnerships?
Did you know one of the key ways ITC is building a water-secure future is through public–private partnerships?
As recently reported by The Hindu, ITC’s collaboration with the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) and IIT Madras in Tiruvottiyur has rejuvenated six water bodies across North Chennai — enhancing their combined storage capacity by three million cubic feet!
- These partnerships go beyond policy, they bring together communities, institutions, and governments to ensure solutions are both scientifically sound and socially sustainable:
- Community Partnerships: Empowering local user groups to plan, co-invest in, and maintain water assets.
- Implementation Partnerships: Collaborating with grassroots civil society organisations for effective on-ground execution.
- Public–Private Partnerships (PPPs): Working with NITI Aayog, NABARD, MGNREGS, IWMP, and state departments to scale models and influence policy.
- Knowledge Partnerships: Engaging with IIT Madras, IISc Bengaluru, WWF India, IUCN, and others to strengthen technical and innovative capabilities, addressing water risks.
The impact on the water bodies has been remarkable:
- Household wells have been recharged, with groundwater table improving from a depth of 2.8 metres to 2 metres in Tiruvottiyur.
- A hydrological study on the city’s zone-I helped identify degradation of traditional tank systems affected by siltation, solid waste, and sewage pollution.
- 68 tonnes of garbage were cleared, and sewer lines were redirected to treatment plants.
These collaborations go beyond Chennai, ITC has implemented similar models in Coimbatore and Pudukkottai, advancing its mission of creating a water-secure future through multi-stakeholder action
